About Me

I've already covered some of this in the "My Fellow McNair Scholars" blog post, but I'll try to mention here what I didn't there.

I'm Jayson or Jay. I come from eastern Michigan off of Lake Huron not far north of Detroit. I have a big family and it's probably okay (taking into account my own subjective bias). I was never a star student really, but I've always gotten good enough grades I guess. My interests are my own and I don't see any reason to change that. I have a hard time feeling comfortable in group settings, I'm not really social that way. I've always liked one-on-one conversations though, and I'm more than happy to meet with people to have one.

Regarding my professional interests, I'm a junior biomedical sciences major at Central Michigan University, 2013 McNair Scholar, and obviously in pursuit of a PhD. I love the idea of research and I've had a great time doing it so far. I'm looking into an advanced degree in cellular or molecular biology. Ideally, after my PhD, I'll be in a career where I have intellectual freedom to take cases or problems, study them, solve them, and write articles about them - a pretty general goal, I know, but that's part of the appeal to me.
